CANDLE FAQ's
Are DeeLee Candles hand made?
All DeeLee candles are handmade and hand poured right in our very own home. A home made candle can't be any more home made than that.
How accurate are the colors in your pictures online?
We think the pictures are very accurate as they are of the actual candle. Please remember that your monitor may be set differently than ours. Your brightness, contrast, and color settings may completely change the way the pictures of the candles look on your end. As always, if you are unsure about the color of a candle you want to purchase, we suggest you order a single candle to see if it is the color you wanted.
Are your candles the same color all the way through?
Yes. Unlike some candle makers, we do not cut corners with our candles. The vibrant colors of are candles are consisent all the way through the candle, from top to bottom. We love making the richest color candles you can find, anywhere.
Are your candles smokeless or dripless?
Yes and No. DeeLee Candles are high quality candles that have been tested to provide a clean, smokefree burn. Under normal burning conditions our candles do no smoke, drip or soot your jars. However, any candle that burns has the potential to smoke or drip if not burned properly. Our candles should not be placed close to the ceiling, or on bookshelves close under the next shelf. Never place a candle next to anything flamable.
Naturally, votive candles are designed to melt and so they will drip every time. You shound never burn a votive candle unless it is votive candle holder.
Our Apothecary jar candles do not drip. The jars we use are specifically designed for high heat situations, like candle burning. However whenever you have heat and glass, there is always the possibility the glass will break or the container will become hot enough to damage the furniture it is resting on. For that reason you should always burn a container candle on a heat resistent surface. In addition, a jar candle can drip if you move it while the wax is still liquid.
Never move any candle while burning and always wait until the wax is completely cooled.
Why does my candle smoke?
There are two reasons why your candle will smoke. First, the wick is too long. Extinguish the candle and trim the wick to about 1/4". The second reason is drafts. A draft on your candle will cause the candle to flare up and smoke. Move your candle to an area where there are no drafts. Even a ceiling fan will cause a draft on your candles.
Do you offer unscented candles?
YES. Please send us an email if you are looking for unscented candles for a special occassion. We can offer you deep discounts on unscented candles. We use so much scent, over half the cost of the candle can be in the scent.
What kind of wax do you use?
We use several types of special Parafin blended waxes. These blends are specifically designed for use in each candle application, such as Apothecary Jars, Votives, etc. All our waxes have been tested to produces consistently quality candles. These blends give our candles a wonderful cold and hot scent throw.
Do you use Lead Wicks?
Absolutely Not! DeeLee Candles is dedicated to providing top quality products, and have never used lead wicks in any of our products. DeeLee Candles uses zinc core wicks that are 100% lead free. Zinc core wicks tend to burn hotter and more evenly than cotton wicks and create less soot. This heavier wick help the candle burn better, especially with the amount of scent in each DeeLee candle.
What are the burn time of your candles?
Candle burn times vary greatly depending on how you burn your own candles. If you keep your wicks longer, then you will get a faster burn on your wax, do you keep your candles lighted for long periods of time or burn 3 or 4 hours at a time, etc. From our testing, you should see the following consertative burn times on our candles.
| Votive Candle |
10+ hrs |
| 10oz Apothecary Jar Candle |
40+ hrs |
| 16oz Apothecary Jar Candle |
90+ hrs |
How can I make my candles last longer?
It is very important to keep your wicks trimmed. Keeping your wick trimmed to 1/4-inch will allow the candle to burn evenly and last longer. If the wick is cut too short the candle will have trouble staying lit. If the wick is too long, then your candle will burn faster and your candle can begin to smoke/soot.
When burning jar candles, be sure to burn the candle long enough to have the wax melt all the way across the jar. Jar candles should be burnt this way, every single time. Not allowing the wax to melt all the way across the jar will result in the candle "burrowing", greatly decreasing the life of your candle.
Why does my candle wick mushroom when burning?
The mushrooming effect on wicks is due to carbon buildup in the candle burning process and is normal. This naturally comes from the scent that is in the candle, and DeeLee Candles are highly scented. The mushrooming effect also come from extended burn times on your candles. Before lighting your candle be sure to trim your wick and remove and debris from your candle.
What is the best way to trim a candle wick?
The best way to trim a candle wick is to use a wick trimmer. But for those that don't have a wick trimmer, a pair of sissors works great. To trim your wick, turn your candle upside down so the wick pieces will fall away from the candle. Carefully use the sissors to cut the wick so only 1/4" of wick is protruding from the wax. For best results try and cut the wick with the tip of your sissors. Make sure you use a good pair of sissors that are sharp for best results. I like to trim my candles over the sink, to catch the wick trimming and then flush the trimmings down the sink with water.
WARNING!
Never trim a wick that is burning. The candle you are trimming needs to be completely cooled, with the wax in a solid state and room temperature to the touch.
